Pool chemistry guru Paul “Jake” Jacobson retires after more than 40 years in the industry

After 41 years with BioLab Australia and New Zealand, Paul “Jake” Jacobson is retiring.

National sales manager Julian Quinn says Jacobson will begin his well-deserved retirement at the end of September, closing an extraordinary chapter that has left a lasting impact on the BioLab business, their customers, and the wider pool and spa industry.

“Over four decades, Jake has built a reputation as a trusted advisor, educator, mentor, and friend,” he says.

“His knowledge of pool and spa chemistry is second to none, but it is his genuine, caring, and approachable nature that has made him such a respected figure among retailers, colleagues, and industry professionals alike. Jake is described as someone who represents BioLab with integrity, professionalism, and genuine care, and is widely respected throughout the industry for both his knowledge and willingness to share it.”

Originally travelling to Australia to pursue his passion for ice hockey, Jacobson joked that he wasn’t going to become a world champion, so he needed to find some work. That search led him to BioLab’s Canterbury Road site in Montrose, Victoria in July 1985, where he would begin what became a remarkable career.

He worked across almost every part of the business, from production and customer care to business development, technical training, national sales and management, his experience giving him a unique perspective on both the company and the industry.

“Few people have understood BioLab’s operations and customers as deeply as Jake, and even fewer have shared that knowledge as generously,” says Quinn.

“Throughout his career, Jake became known for his practical wisdom and memorable sayings. One phrase many colleagues and retailers will always associate with him is the goal of becoming the KTLA – the Known, Trusted Leading Authority in pool and spa care.

“His customer-first mindset is perhaps best captured by another famous Jake quote: ‘If I sell you less, you will love me more’.

“While often said with a smile, the message behind it was serious. Jake firmly believed that success wasn’t about selling more products. It was about understanding what customers genuinely needed to achieve the best water quality, lifestyle enjoyment, and protection of their investment.”

Jacobson was also a keynote speaker at SPLASH! Trade Expos in Australia and New Zealand, contributed to the revision of Australian Standards, helped develop SPASA Victoria’s first spa maintenance course, and played an important role in securing the Dryden Aqua distributorship for Australia and New Zealand.

A certified pool operator (CPO) and qualified trainer and assessor, many retailers credit his training sessions as some of the most practical and valuable they have attended.

“Jake had an incredible career, and we wish him every happiness in retirement.”
